Black mold doesn’t hold one look. The same colony reads as slimy and dark green in wet conditions, powdery and sooty once the moisture dries out, and faintly hairy at its expanding edges as the growth margin pushes outward. Getting the ID wrong, or assuming a surface wipe settled it, is how a small problem stays hidden long enough to become a large one.

Black Mold Starts Green, Not Black 

Early colonies of black mold run greenish-grey to greenish-black, well short of the deep jet black most people expect when they go looking for black mold. At the growth margin, where new hyphae are still pushing outward, the edges may appear slightly lighter, sometimes with a faint whitish fringe. As the colony matures and spore production increases, it darkens from the center out. By the time a patch is fully established, it’s dense, concentrated, and deep greenish-black to pure black. 

Neither shade confirms the species. Cladosporium, one of the most common molds found indoors, presents as olive-black to brownish-black with a velvety texture and is constantly misread as Stachybotrys chartarum. Aureobasidium starts pink or brown and darkens to black as it matures, turning up on window frames, painted walls, and wallpaper. Both are far more common than true black mold and carry different remediation considerations.

Color narrows the field. It doesn’t close it.

The Same Mold Looks Completely Different Depending on When You Find It 

Color narrows the suspect list. Texture closes it faster, but only once you account for what state the colony is in.

State 1: Slimy and Gelatinous Means the Water Is Still Running 

In wet, active conditions, with the moisture source still running, Stachybotrys looks gelatinous and slick. It can read as dark ooze or carry a wet sheen across the surface. This is the look most people carry in their heads when they think of black mold, and it’s the clearest signal that the water source hasn’t been resolved.

State 2: A Hairy Fringe Marks an Actively Expanding Colony 

Before heavy spore production concentrates in the colony’s center, the edges display hair-like filaments called hyphae. This black hairy mold’s appearance (a faint fuzzy fringe at the outer edge) shows up most clearly under direct light or mild magnification. It’s the colony’s expanding front, sitting flat against whatever cellulose-rich surface it’s colonizing. No raised mat, no lifted texture.

State 3: Powdery and Sooty Is the Most Dangerous State to Disturb 

When the moisture source cuts off, the colony dries out, turns powdery and sooty, and looks almost like fine soot settled on the surface. Dried spores release into the air with far less friction than wet ones. Moving air through the space, or touching the patch without containment, can disperse them across the room.

Stachybotrys does not grow in the raised, fluffy mats characteristic of Aspergillus or Penicillium. That flat, surface-hugging growth is also why a wipe test misleads. The visible layer comes off, but the mycelium has already penetrated the paper facing of the drywall beneath it. The colony isn’t sitting on the material. It’s feeding from inside it.

The Surface Tells You Whether Mold Can Establish There 

Stachybotrys doesn’t grow everywhere moisture touches. It requires a cellulose-rich food source: the paper facing on drywall, wood framing, ceiling tiles, cardboard, and wallpaper.
It cannot establish on glass, ceramic tile, metal, or vinyl — which is why it colonizes the drywall behind a shower, not the tile itself.

In Los Angeles specifically, three moisture patterns drive most of the black mold growth calls that an IICRC-certified crew responds to.

  • Slab leaks in mid-century homes, where aging copper and galvanized plumbing runs beneath concrete floors, feed wall cavities and floor assemblies slowly and silently. 
  • Marine-layer condensation through May and June soaks repeatedly into single-pane wood window frames in older Westside and coastal properties. 
  • In condos and high-rises, shared-wall plumbing leaks concentrate moisture inside wall cavities where cellulose-faced drywall can sit wet for weeks before anyone notices.

Stachybotrys is a slow, tertiary colonizer. Penicillium and Cladosporium establish first, some within days of a water event. Stachybotrys moves in behind them on materials that have stayed wet long enough for faster species to run out of competition. By the time you see a black patch, the wall has likely been wet for weeks. The faster-growing molds that arrived first may be invisible beneath it.

A Musty Smell with No Visible Growth Means the Colony Is Already Inside the Wall

Stachybotrys produces a distinctively strong, earthy odor, somewhere between damp soil and rotting paper, more pungent than the faint mustiness of surface mildew. If you’re catching that smell and can’t find the source, the colony isn’t missing. It’s in a wall cavity, under the flooring, or inside the ductwork, where the material stays chronically damp.

That odor pattern shows up frequently in LA properties after the June Gloom period. Condensation from the marine layer works into wood window frames or exterior wall sheathing week after week, with no dramatic flooding event and no obvious water stain, until the accumulated moisture has fed a colony that’s well established before anyone smells it. A corner bedroom that smells musty on overcast mornings but clears when you open the windows is worth investigating rather than airing it out and ignoring it.

Odor can’t identify the species. What it confirms is active growth, and that confirmation tells you where to point a moisture meter. That’s a faster and cheaper starting point than a lab test.

You Don’t Need a Species Name to Know What Needs to Happen 

No visual inspection, including that of a certified professional, can confirm Stachybotrys chartarum by sight alone. Lab analysis of a physical sample is the only definitive path to species ID. The CDC states this plainly: species identification is unnecessary for remediation decisions.

From an honest expert standpoint, a dark, slimy, musty-smelling patch on drywall that followed a water event is a contamination that needs full remediation. Spending money on species testing before that work begins doesn’t change what the crew does. Post-remediation clearance testing, which confirms the work held and spore counts returned to baseline, is where testing genuinely earns its cost.

Among black mold’s common misidentifications, three come up most frequently. 

Soot and smoke staining from candles or cooking leaves dark patches with no organic growth pattern and no odor. Cladosporium also grows on tile grout and fabric. Stachybotrys won’t colonize tile, so a dark patch on grout is almost never it. Dried water staining, the ring a leak leaves after it dries, has no texture, no odor, and no growth margin. Mold has all three.

What visual inspection can do is narrow the probability and point toward the moisture source, which is the information that actually drives the remediation decision.

We used bleach, and it came back in two weeks. Why?

Bleach kills surface spores on non-porous materials but doesn’t penetrate porous substrates like drywall or wood. The mycelium, which is the root network inside the material, survives and regrows. Returning growth after a bleach treatment is one of the clearest signs the material itself needs to come out, not just the surface.

Can I paint over black mold to stop it from spreading?

Paint seals the surface but not the colony. Mold continues growing beneath the paint layer and eventually pushes back through. It’s surface concealment, not remediation.

Is it safe to stay in the house during mold remediation?

It depends on location and scope. A contained single-room job with proper negative-air pressure and plastic barriers generally allows occupancy in unaffected parts of the home. Any work near HVAC returns raises cross-contamination risk enough that temporary relocation is the standard recommendation. Ask the remediation company to walk through their containment plan before work begins.

How long does professional mold remediation take for a mid-size patch?
